Ongoing US 1 Southbound Lane Closure to Begin as Islamorada Transmission Main Replacement Project Progresses

Lane Closure

Key West, FL (April 27, 2023) – The Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority’s (FKAA) Islamorada Transmission Main Replacement Project is progressing ahead of schedule. As of today, 1,300 feet of the new 36-inch transmission main has been laid near MM 80, and 900 feet of new 42-inch pipe has been installed under the seabed at Teatable Relief Crossing.

A rolling southbound lane closure on US 1 (near MM 80.3) is anticipated to begin on Monday, May 1, 2023. While the ongoing lane closure is expected to continue through March 2024, one northbound and one southbound lane, and bike lane access, will remain open along US 1 for the duration of the project.

“The Islamorada Transmission Main Replacement Project is just one project in FKAA’s project pipeline totaling more than $115 million in water infrastructure improvements,” said Greg Veliz, Executive Director of the FKAA. “While each project is important because it strengthens our drinking water system, we will remain mindful of traffic mitigation and do our absolute best to accommodate residents, businesses, and visitors.”

From MM 80 to 84 crews will be working 24/7 Monday through Friday to replace the transmission main in Islamorada, however work will pause for major holidays and events. The Islamorada Transmission Main Replacement Project is slated for completion in February 2025, but traffic impacts are expected to lessen after March 2024.
