What Is Recycled Water?

Recycled water is wastewater that is treated to extremely high standards, and is suitable for irrigation and outdoor uses. It is water that otherwise would be wasted by injecting into an underground well.

Also known as reclaimed or reuse water, this water is an important part of the FKAA's future water supply. The FKAA is installing recycled water distribution systems in the areas surrounding our advanced wastewater treatment (AWT) plants on Duck Key and the Big Coppitt service area.

The recycled water will be delivered through purple pipe, with a separate meter, to avoid any cross-contamination with your potable, house supply. Thanks in part to generous grant funding from our partners at the South Florida Water Management District, the cost for using recycled water will be less than using our drinking water supply. This is just one way the FKAA is working to protect our precious, and limited, Biscayne Aquifer.
